Sunday Discussion: On Writing

Every Sunday I find a new bookish topic to discuss.  Have an idea for a discussion post?  Just leave a comment below or email me at christinathebookreader@gmail.com

This week I want to talk about what I'm writing.

I am participating in NaNoWriMo this month.  You may remember that I did Camp NaNoWriMo back in July.  Well, November is actually National Novel Writing Month.  So I couldn't pass up the opportunity to really work on it.  So I want to share some information on what I did in July and what I will be working on this month.

In July, I finished up the first draft of a YA dystopian fantasy that I started in 2011.  I had completely forgotten about it and just randomly found it on my computer again a while back.  Since then, I have gone through more drafts and revision (three more drafts?) and changed the ending with every single one.  I have no real name for it, but we call it its working name: The Stocks.  It ended at around 45k words - short for a YA novel.  I am thinking with more revision it will likely end up longer.  I will probably end of adding more scenes.

As for this November... I had this super shiny idea that I just couldn't get out of my head.  So I had to start working on it to see if it would go anywhere.  And I love this idea so much.  I love it more than The Stocks.  I ended up setting it aside so I could concentrate on getting The Stocks polished.  But November is its time to shine.  Does it have a name?  Hmmm... Let's call it... Iron Curse.  I just came up with that on the spot.  But I couldn't decide because so many things fit for it...

Anyway, this WIP is only about 5k words in (that's not very far at all).  And I plan to have it be ~90k.  It's a high fantasy/fae retelling of one of my favorite books.  One I've never seen a retelling of.  Well at least the original concept was that.  It veers more and more every time I sit down to write.

Well that part is over.  So that is what I'm currently writing.

As someone with a full-time job (and a full-time procrastinator) I often have trouble finding the time to write.  Usually, inspiration comes to me at the most random of times: when I'm fixing an HPLC or when I'm on a road trip.  So it can be difficult sometimes to actually get anything useful done.

So here's my question.  Do you write?  Are you doing NaNoWriMo?  How do you find your inspiration?

  1. I'm not doing Nano proper because I just don't have the time and the book I'm working on is going to be very long (I'm thinking 200k words). My goal is to write 500 words a day, which I've so far managed. I find inspiration literally everywhere and keep a journal with me so that if even a single thought enters my mind I can write it down. I hope Nano goes well for you! Pretty much my whole circle of friends is doing something for it.
