Review: Thicker than Water by Brigid Kemmerer

Thicker Than WaterTitle: Thicker than Water
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Publisher: Kensington Books
Release Date: December 29, 2015

Thomas Bellweather hasn’t been in town long. Just long enough for his newlywed mother to be murdered, and for his new stepdad’s cop colleagues to decide Thomas is the primary suspect.

Not that there’s any evidence. But before Thomas got to Garretts Mill there had just been one other murder in twenty years.

The only person who believes him is Charlotte Rooker, little sister to three cops and, with her soft hands and sweet curves, straight-up dangerous to Thomas. Her best friend was the other murder vic. And she’d like a couple answers.

Answers that could get them both killed, and reveal a truth Thomas would die to keep hidden…

I picked up this book on a whim when I saw a friend on twitter raving about it.  When I started I was instantly hooked.  Right from the beginning I felt such sympathy for Thomas.  And I felt a real connection between him and Charlotte.

The plot here keeps unraveling more and more mysteries.  Right when I thought I had it figured out another twist was added.  Did I expect it to take a supernatural turn?  No, but I'm not complaining.  All in all, it reminded me a bit of the Mara Dyer series, partially because of the slight supernatural element and partially because of the pretty cover.  By the end, I was pretty certain I had the final twist figured out, and I was right.  Which, after the entire book of mostly being wrong was kind of rewarding.

I loved Charlotte.  She thought for herself.  And even though her family treated her pretty terribly (i.e. like thinking for herself would make her get hurt) she still had a lot of spunk.  And she still loved them, despite them being pretty terrible to her at times.  I couldn't help but feel sorry for Thomas who got thrust into such a terrible situation with no idea what was going on.

Overall?
I'm not sure.  Did I love it?  Maybe?  I don't know.  I will definitely buy it for myself.  If you like contemporaries with a bit of a supernatural twist, you should read this.  If you liked the Mara Dyer series, I think you will probably like this too.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I've read a few other books by this author and I really enjoyed them, but this didn't really sound like my kind of book. But you mention it's like Mara Dyer? Consider me sold! Great review.
