Before
Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland. But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.
After
Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect. No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.

Mira's name is known to all in the Fallen Isles. She's the Hopebearer. The girl who had a peace treaty named after her. But only those closest to her know who she really is. So when Mira learns a secret about the dragons, she is promptly imprisoned.
My first question while reading was, "What the heck did she learn?" Jodi gives us little glimpses of what happened through a non-linear timeline. And each little bit gets you closer and closer to figuring out the secret. All the while, Mira is still imprisoned in the Fallen Isles most notorious prison. This is a book that would seriously benefit from having a map, as the names of places mentioned tend to get jumbled. There are just so many places, and it's tough to keep track of everything.
I'd like to talk about the things that I loved. First off, we have a heroine who is beautifully flawed, but we can still cheer for her. Her anxiety is very real. And she worries about everyone learning about her anxiety and about the dragons more than she worries about getting out of prison. Mira is probably my favorite protagonist in all of Jodi's books to date.
Did I also mention dragons? Because there are dragons in this book. Explanations of all different kinds and breed of dragon, interaction with baby dragons, saving dragons, capturing dragons... It's all here. I would just love to see even more.
Another thing to love is the great friendships. The bonds between Ilina, Hristo, and Mira were admirable. The things they'd do for each other, to keep each other safe--I only wish I could have a friendship like that in my life.
And then we have the addition of Aaru. Who I still don't know enough about. PLEASE TELL ME MORE JODI. I'm not shouting, you're shouting. But seriously, Aaru was awesome. I loved that his people have their own silent language, kind of like sign language, but a bit different.
Overall
I really loved the first book in the Fallen Isles series. If you've read and loved Jodi's work before, I think you will absolutely adore Before She Ignites. I noticed that the style seemed to be more similar to that of Incarnate, so if you read and loved that one, prepare yourself to be blown away.
