Sunday Discussion: Writing with Playlists

Every Sunday I take a bookish topic and discuss.  Have an idea for a discussion post?  Just leave a comment or send me an email at christinathebookreader@gmail.com,

This month I'm talking a lot about writing, probably because of NaNoWriMo.

So that in mind, I want to talk about something that has been on my mind.  Fellow readers and writers... do you listen to music while you read and/or write?

Personally, I cannot read with music on.  I find it insanely distracting.  I'll sit there and listen to the music rather than actually read.  But I do like to have music on while I write.  For the most part, I don't care what I have on.  I find this is different from most writers.  Most like to have something themed similar to what they are writing or at least something to give them the mood of the story.  But me?  Meh.  Mostly this month I've been listening to Les Mis.

Today (it is the ninth when I write this post) is so far my least productive writing day yet.  And so I decided to do an experiment.  I spent about an hour compiling songs on Spotify to suit Iron Curse.  And then I wrote.  And I found I got ~1k words pretty quickly.  Wow.  The power of playlists.

If you're curious, here is the playlist that I used.

Do you use playlists?  What kind of music do you like to listen to while reading/writing?

  1. Oh I can't read with music either it's so distracting! But often I can write with music. I tend to cultivate a playlist of songs that I like already that have something to do with the story I'm writing, even if it's just a phrase, and put the playlist on shuffle and repeat. It's mostly background music and I don't really hear it as I write, but when I fall out of typing just hearing the music reminds me to get my but moving on something productive.
