Review: Edenhart's Rivalry by J.N. Tomczak

Edenhart's Rivalry (Kingdom of the Faeries, #1)Title: Edenhart's Rivalry
Author: J.N. Tomczak
Release Date: February 11, 2016

A dark power is rising, and a kingdom is in dire need of a leader when the King of the Faeries falls in battle. Or so, that’s what they’re led to believe, but his only heir and daughter, Aurora, suspects murder.

But when she and her loyal friend Percy, the Captain of the Elite Guard, discover an ancient prophecy foretold by the enigmatic Faerie Sorcerers, Aurora finds herself an unwilling pawn in a dark plot that will threaten everything she holds dear.

Her courage and magic will be her greatest weapons if she hopes to succeed where all others have failed. But will she? Aurora must ask herself this very question: just how far is she willing to go to save her kingdom, and at what costs?

I love a good fantasy, and this definitely qualified.  Magic, goblins, faeries, dragons.  This book has everything I love in a YA fantasy.  Including small amounts of romance that don't overthrow the plot.

When Aurora's father dies in a mysterious battle, she must take up the mantle as queen of the faeries.  She's met with opposition everywhere, but still tries to be a good ruler.  Of course, the dark and mysterious force that killed her father has other plans, and she finds herself in the middle of a war.

To me, this started out a tad bit slow.  But it soon picked up pace with lots of action and moments of confusion.  I initially wasn't too fond of Aurora, but she grew on me a lot.  And she went through so many things causing her character to grow.  By the end, I really loved her.

I liked Percy even though he wasn't the deepest character.  But as the book went on, I found myself loving Tristan more and more.  He's got some kind of secret and I intend to find out what it is.

So things happened in this book that I wasn't expecting.  I can't say all of them were a complete shock.  I should have seen them coming,  It was just one of those things I didn't want to see coming, so I didn't.  And then other things happened.  And the ending is pure evil!  I have some suspicions about what will happen next and what Tristan is hiding.  But I can't say for sure.  I'll definitely have to read the next book in the series when it's released.

Overall
I really enjoyed this, and I'm now anxiously awaiting the next installment.  If you like action-packed fantasy and books with faeries, you can't go wrong!

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion, and that in no way sways my opinion of this book.
